Piano Movers in Westchester County, NY | A Guide

You’re moving, and you need to take your piano with you - safely. Should you call your friends, hire some movers, or go all-out with a piano moving company? We’ll get to that below.

If you need Westchester County piano lessons, please get in touch! I would be happy to set up a trial lesson, and I frequently travel to student homes in the Westchester, NY area.

Do You Need To Hire a Piano Mover?

Yes, if it’s at all financially feasible, you are better off hiring someone with piano-specific moving experience. Piano movers know how to move a piano, they understand the value of your instrument, and perhaps most importantly, they have specialized equipment that will help them get the job done safely.

You may save a few hundred dollars by inviting your friends over to help, but the cost of damage to your home, a broken piano leg, or an injured back is far greater!

Moving Grand Pianos vs. Upright Pianos

Not all pianos are created equal. If you have a simple 450 lb. Chickering upright piano, you might be able to move it yourself (it’s still very awkward, so I don’t recommend it). If you have something like an old Steinway K52, you won’t want to try and move it yourself. It’s extremely tall, awkward, and heavy, and it’s not worth the risk!

The good news is that you don’t need as much equipment to move an upright piano - you can get away with two furniture dollies and some moving blankets if it’s a small piano.

Grand pianos, on the other hand, should only be moved by experts. They must be disassembled, moved with specialized dollies with straps, and moved up and down stairs with special ramps and other pieces of equipment. Many piano movers also insure your piano during the move and transport your instrument in climate controlled trucks.

Additional Information For Moving a Piano In Westchester County

Measure Your Hallways, Doors, and the Piano

If for some reason you’re moving the piano out a different way than it entered your home, make sure it will fit around each corner, in the hallways, and out the door. If you are hiring a mover (please do), you should let them know how many steps there will be and what kind of path they will be following with the piano.

Clear Your Walkways

It sounds like an obvious suggestion, but really - make sure your movers have plenty of room to work with. You don’t want them to have to pause mid-lift because they realize the hallway is cluttered.

Have a Tuner In Mind For After Your Move

You will need to tune your piano several times in the first year at your new location - it’s just a necessary evil. Every environment is different, and pianos are surprisingly sensitive when it comes to temperature and humidity.
