Should You Buy a New Or Used Piano?

That’s really a matter of budget. A piano is something you can enjoy for your entire lifetime and pass down to future generations, so just because a new piano is expensive does not mean you shouldn’t get it. In fact, some pianos actually appreciate in value over time (you’ll have to do some brand-specific research).

That said, you can save a significant amount of money by purchasing a pre-owned piano, and if it comes refurbished from a reputable piano dealer, you may even get a warranty on the instrument. Also, pianos don’t wear out quickly (if used respectfully), so if it’s in great condition and you’ve had a chance to play it, you shouldn’t be worried about purchasing a used piano. Take this into consideration as well - even if you have to put $1,000 of repair work into the used piano, you’ll still have saved a significant amount of money.

Does The Brand Matter? Do You Really Need a Steinway?

If you’ve been eyeing the local piano market, you’ve probably noticed that even used Steinways are significantly more expensive than counterparts like Baldwin and Yamaha. Used Steinway Model S pianos, for instance, still sell for $25K+, and that’s because nobody wants to pay for a new one, and they are sized to fit in most homes or condos.

But is it actually that much better than a Baldwin? Not necessarily. Yamaha, Baldwin, Boston, and other brands make some fantastic pianos that will last just as long as a Steinway, and unless you need a particular type of sound for recording or performance purposes, you may find that you love a different model more than Steinway pianos. This is a very personal decision.

That said, be careful when you are buying a piano. Some salespeople (and this is rare) will intentionally have a Steinway or other premium brand of piano on the floor that has fallen into a state of disrepair. Then, when buyers ask to hear the difference between the Steinway and a different piano (say, a Young Chang piano), the buyers are shocked to hear that the Young Chang sounds better than the Steinway. But this is only because the Steinway wasn’t in tune or something like that - so it’s a setup. If a dealership is incentivized to sell more of a particular brand of piano (in this case, Young Changs), you might have to watch out for dishonest selling tactics. It’s similar to how some doctors are incentivized to over-prescribe certain brands of medicine.
