My Piano Teaching Philosophy

Music is too special not to share, and there’s always more to learn. My goal is to combine my jazz piano, classical piano, saxophone, conducting, and composition experience into a cohesive educational product that will enrich the lives of my students - I want every pianist (or aspiring pianist) who works with me to love music more as a result of lessons in my studio.

My biography and lesson guide provide more in-depth information about my lessons and philosophies, and please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

New Rochelle Piano Lessons: In-Home or Online

Piano Lessons At Your Home

Life is stressful enough, and traveling to a teacher’s studio can add unnecessary hassle to your busy schedule. I function as a traveling piano teacher, and I’m happy to visit your home and teach you or your child there. Some children learn better at home, and parents or caregivers are certainly welcome to sit in on lessons. In fact, this can teach you how to help your child practice! Whether you don’t have the time to visit a teacher, don’t live close enough to a qualified instructor, or have other reasons to sign up for in-home piano lessons in New Rochelle, please get in touch.

Virtual Lessons In Real Time

The recent public health crisis certainly turned online learning into a necessity, but there are plenty of other reasons to take online piano lessons - it saves you from having to leave home, you can study with me from anywhere in the world, and some kids are getting more comfortable learning online than in person! As long as you have a decent keyboard, high speed internet, and a webcam (most laptops or even smartphones are fine), we can accomplish just as much online as we would in person.

What Material Will We Cover in Piano Lessons?

I take a well-rounded, structured approach to piano teaching, and I don’t want my students to feel deficient in any particular area. We will cover reading, theory, technique, interpretation, improvisation, and more.

First and Foremost, Technique

Nothing you learn at the piano will matter if you play with tension, incorrect hand position, or other technical errors. Bad posture and other deficiencies can lead to serious injuries or pain in the future, and we will focus on correcting these issues early on. Adults in particular bring more tension to the keyboard - after all, most of us spend hours at a computer on a given day. Kids have less internalized bad technique, but I will help kids and adults alike play in a stress-free manner.

Improving Your Reading

Would you love to sit down at the piano, open a book of intermediate repertoire, and just start playing through it? Most pianists dream of this ability, but few are willing to tackle sight reading head-on. We will work on your reading skills from day one, and I can assign you exercises and drills that will help you read music much the same way you read a book - fluently and without thinking about it.

Ear Training

The ear can be taught, and we will focus on this aspect of music in tandem with reading and technique. You should be able to recognize skips vs. leaps (intervals), and you should be able to “sound out” a tune on the keyboard. When you combine this ability with a basic knowledge of music theory, and special ability comes to life - improvisation and ear playing. I will put my jazz experience to work for you, and we can work on jazz or blues improvisation if you would like.

Music Theory

We will dig into keys, scales, modes, chord structure, composition techniques and more to give you a thorough understanding of how music works. You will grow your appreciation of music, and you’ll be able to pursue more difficult literature and improvisation techniques as a result.

New Rochelle Piano Lessons For Kids, Adults, Beginners, and Beyond

Are you a retired individual who wants to start piano for the first time? That’s fantastic - there’s lots that we can accomplish. Is your child a talented pianist who wants to audition for a degree in music? I’m happy to work with them as well. I’ve also started young kids on the piano and worked with every other type of student, and regardless of your goals or background, we can make piano lessons effective for you.

Lesson Duration and Rates

My students are offered 30 minute ($85), 60 minute ($140), and 90 minute ($210) lessons, and the choice is yours to make. More advanced students should certainly consider a longer lesson time, but we can accomplish a great deal in a 30 minute lesson as well. Trial lessons are billed at the normal rates.
