About Pianist & Teacher Dave Long

As a lifelong musician, I’ve had the privilege of studying at the college level and beyond with music theorists, historians, professional pianists, and conductors.

Most recently, I’ve been a student of acclaimed professor Seymour Bernstein, and I’ve taken continuing education courses at the Aaron Copland School of Music.

I mix elements of my classical music training, jazz piano experience, and composition studies into each of my piano lessons in White Plains, and I would love to work with you.

White Plains, NY Piano Lesson Information

What Will You Learn In Piano Lessons?

I take a comprehensive approach to piano teaching, so we will cover every element of musicality and musicianship.

  • Related to technique: posture, hand position, finger technique, tension-free playing, and more.

  • Related to musicianship: you’ll learn music theory, how to play by ear, reading skills, interpretation, and more

  • Related to practicing the piano: I want you to become an independent pianist, so I will teach you how to practice and improve even when I’m not around.

I’ve studied a number of musical disciplines -- history, theory, conducting, saxophone, classical music, jazz, and saxophone -- and I always enjoy the opportunity to share what I’ve learned with my students.

The Musical Genres I Teach

In short, your goals are my goals. If you want to improve your sight reading or classical repertoire, we’ll work on that. If you want to learn jazz improvisation or playing by ear at the piano, I’d love to help. If you want to learn Broadway tunes, play rock songs off lead sheets, or learn your blues scales, we’ll work on those too! Even if you are an adult who simply wants to learn to read music so you can play your favorite tunes or pieces on the keyboard, I’d love to help you.

You are also welcome to reach out to me with your goals, and we’ll schedule a phone call or trial lesson to see if it’s a good fit. For more info about lessons and what you might learn, keep reading:

What Ages Do I Teach?

I work with students of all ages in White Plains, and whether you’re a recently retired individual, a young adult, or have a child you’d like to start at the piano, get in touch. I don’t have a hard-and-fast minimum age requirement, but if you have a young child who would like to learn the piano, we will measure their readiness during our trial lesson.

Do You Need A Piano Or Keyboard To Get Started?

I do require students to have a functioning piano or digital piano when we get started, and that’s for two reasons:

  1. You can’t improve at the piano if you aren’t able to practice consistently

  2. I teach in-home piano lessons, so you will get more out of your lessons with a good instrument at home

How Much Do Piano Lessons Cost in White Plains, NY?

  • 90 minutes: $210

My payment methods are flexible, and you are allowed to cancel a lesson without paying for it as long as you give me 24 hours notice. Trial lessons are billed at the normal rates.
