My background is in classical piano, jazz piano, composition, and conducting, and in addition to my studies at Boston University and the Aaron Copland School of Music, I’ve studied extensively with acclaimed pianist Seymour Bernstein.

I’m happy to offer piano lessons in Westchester, and whether you’re a beginning student or an experienced pianist, I’m sure we can accomplish much together.

Piano Lessons For Beginners in Westchester

I’ve worked with child beginners and adult beginners, and I realize that no two students are alike. I’m experienced with a number of different piano methods, including Faber and Alfred; if you’d like to read more, you’re welcome to explore my guides to piano books for kids and piano books for adults.

Regardless of your prior musical experience, your disposition as an aural or visual learner, or your goals, we can work together to help you read music, play by ear, understand theory, and play with proper technique.

Piano Lessons For Intermediate & Advancing Students

I also enjoy working with students who have more experience with music and piano playing - I have studied much of the piano literature and piano pedagogy material, and I can help you choose music and practice strategies that will help you work on your deficiencies, challenge you, and push you to the next level. Whether you are working on Chopin or Beethoven or learning to improvise, we can work together to make you a better reader, more knowledgeable musician, and stronger pianist overall.

Piano Lessons For Adults in Westchester

It’s never too late to learn the piano, and whether you are a young professional or a retired individual, you can still learn to sight read piano music, play jazz by ear, interpret musical scores, and more. I’m happy to work with your goals at the piano - some adults simply want to learn a book of their favorite songs, while others really want to dig into classical repertoire and learn how to sight read and interpret music. You do have to commit to regular practice if you want to improve at the keyboard, but rest assured that you can absolutely learn how to play the piano as an adult in my studio.

Subject Matter We Will Study in Westchester Piano Lessons

Playing Quickly and Painlessly

You’ve probably heard of piano technique: your posture, your pedaling, the deftness of your hands, and things like that. Right from the beginning, we will make sure that the technical elements of your playing, your arm and wrists movements, and your posture are correct. This will help you gain speed at the piano and play for many years without pain.

Reading and Ear Playing

Many pianists can either read music well or play music by ear. Ideally, you should be able to do both. We will focus on your ability to hear and repeat intervals, read lines of music quickly at first sight, and understand the theoretical elements behind the chords you see so you can sight read intermediate and advanced music at a high level over time.

Musical Interpretation & Theory

We’ll dig into music lines, how pieces of music can be broken into sections and themes (often by key), and how that applies to your playing. An important part of this is also understanding modes, scales, key signatures, time signatures, and other elements of music theory. Don’t worry, there will still be lots of playing during your lesson, but if you ignore music theory, you’ll never reach your potential at the keyboard.

A Multi-Genre Approach

I’ve studied classical music and jazz extensively, but the fundamental elements of what I teach will enable you to pursue the genre of your choosing. Music theory and piano technique apply to jazz, rock, pop, samba, and everything else, and you’ll be able to create hooks on your own, read lead sheets, and read serious works of classical repertoire.

Need Piano Lessons Near Me In Westchester County?

I teach in-home piano lessons in Westchester County, so whether you need lessons near Harrison, Tarrytown, or Bedford Hills, I can travel to you and help you learn the piano. It would be advantageous if you had a full-sized 88 key keyboard, but it can be digital or acoustic. Weighted keys are also ideal, but you can certainly learn how to play without them. Let me know if you’d like to get started with in-home piano lessons in Westchester County - we can find a mutually beneficial time as soon as possible.

Take Virtual Piano Lessons

If you would rather not take in-person piano lessons for any reason, I do offer virtual piano lessons through Zoom or other video chat software. We can test our connection in a trial lesson - you will need high speed internet - and we can work out a camera angle that allows me to see your technique. We can accomplish just as much in live online piano lessons as we would in person, so get in touch for more information.
